Tuition in Schools

Ivor and Philippa are currently visiting one local Primary School giving lessons and providing instruments to children during school time.  Dozens have tried this year and as a result we have a very good young trio in Saints and Scholars.

Tuition Free Aid

In areas of the band where players are scarce the Old Boys are prepared to financially help young folk gain tuition.  We are keen to do this for instruments where we lack the expertise.  Currently we have one young person who has taken this opportunity & we look forward to more!

Instrument Loan Scheme since sept 2010

We thought it would be good to update you on some of the other important work that has been going on at the Old Boys!  Since September 2010 AOB has been lending out instruments free-of-charge to young folk in local primary schools to give them the opportunity to study with SELB tutors.  As many as 10 young folk have taken this opportunity and we are keep to build on this and are hopeful that eventually we may be able to gain new band members through this initiative.  For further details contact Ivor Stevenson at ivorbob@hotmail.com.

On Saturday 16th October Armagh Old Boys played host to 12 bands competing in the NIBA contest which was held in the Market Place Theatre.  AOB provided rehearsal venues for participants & is delighted that contributions of £230 were raised, bringing the total fundraising to-date for Marie Curie to £1350.  AOB hope everyone had an enjoyable time on Saturday & would like to thank all the bands that contributed.  Thanks to Raymond, Heather & Ivor for facilitating this.

Inspiring experiences at AOB Summer School 2010 with foden's octet

For the tenth successive year Foden’s Band sent a wonderful octet of tutors to the Brass Summer School in Armagh.  Over 20 Brass Bands sent participants, mostly young with a few young at heart.  Out of the 112 folk who attended, 83 took part in the Finale Concert in First Presbyterian Church – what an inspiring sight to see the large ensemble in their white shirts and Foden’s Armagh Summer School ties processing to their seats for this performance!!

The programme of music included; Ticket to Ride, The Volcano, English Folk Songs, Little Suite for Brass, Nimrod, The Great Gate of Kiev, Salute to Sinatra, Pirates of the Caribbean, Dear Lord & Father of Mankind, Finale to Queen, Highland Cathedral, Variations on Maccabeus and Roar (Andy Scott).  These inspired choices gave participants the opportunity to experience lots of different styles of playing.  The concept of getting the band to play different styles, rather than having a band play all the music in one style was probably the over-riding inspiration of the week – Thank you Foden’s Band.

The person with the baton has an incredible responsibility for inspiring the ensemble.  Mike Fowles carried this role off with great aplomb, humour and energy – well done & thank you Mike!!

The other 7 tutors also took centre stage with a wide variety of warm ups – clapping, buzzing, breathing, conducting skills and stage presentation to name but a few.  The wide variety of approaches helped keep participants captivated and motivated!!

Throughout the week the sectional classes, workshops and rehearsals passed all too quickly, with all the tutors and participants establishing excellent working rapport.  This was a great inspiration for the future and a big thank you must be paid to the 2010 tutors; Richard, Dave, Anita, Leslie, Dave Morton, Toby, Mark & not forgetting Mike!!  THANK YOU!

During the week Edel Murphy from the Arts Council for Northern Ireland experience firsthand the Summer School & her visit was very much appreciated by all.

As Armagh OId Boys’ Chair Ivor Stevenson concludes “it is worth reflecting on the various public performances of the 2010 Summer School week including the Young Musicians Night, The Tutors Treat and BBQ, the recordings for our future CD and DVD and the Finale Concert.  These are by-products of a wonderful inspiring experience of our tenth annual Summer School week in Armagh.  Sincere thanks to everyone who made this year another cracker including our tutors, funders, parents, participants and facilitators.”

ARMAGH OLD BOYS ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT SOME MUCH NEEDED AND WELCOMED FUNDING FOR SUMMER SCHOOL 2010 IS BEING PROVIDED BY THE ARTS COUNCIL FOR NORTHERN IRELAND.  This funding will help make our 10th Annual Summer School something special & we look forward to hosting a visit from members of the Arts Council, so they can see what we're all about!  Let's make sure to put on a good show for them!

Armagh Apple Blossom Festival 3rd May 2008

On Saturday 3rd May 2008 the band turned out in good numbers to support the local markets in Armagh City Centre as part of the Apple Blossom Fesitval.  The programme of music included favourite marches and traditional tunes from yester year.  The afternoons events lasted over 4 hours and the band were on duty throughout - well done!

Celebration Service First Presbyterian Church, Armagh '100 Years of brass' 27th April 2008

The AOB Band had the privilege of leading this special service to celebrate 100 years of brass.  Armagh Old Boys' Band was founded in 1897, initially as a flute band made the switch to brass in 1908.  For many years right up to the 1930's AOB had a very strong relationship with First Presbyterian Church, Armagh.

The theme of the service 'Present yet Unseen' was based on Edward Gregson's arrangement of 'Variations on Laudate Dominum' which the band played as part of the service.  Lessons were read by J-A Steveson and William Stevenson.  Other music included 'Little Prayer' and 'Where Ere Ye Walk'.  A Tuba solo 'Serenade from the Student Prince' was played by Les Neish accompanied by Elise Crean.  'Africian Funk' was played as part of the childrens address and during the offering.  Rev Tony Davidson was the speaker for the service and a 100th Anniversary photograph was taken after the service on the front steps of the magnificent building.

Fiskerwick Presbyterian 'Celebration of Life' Ulster Cancer Foundation 13th April 2008

For the second year running the band was delighted to travel to Belfast and participate in this very encouraging service with guest speaker William Crawley from the BBC.

Funeral Sevice - for Life Time Member J.K. Scott April 2008

The band turned out in very good numbers at short notice to play at Jim's funeral service at St. Marks Parish Chursh, Armagh.  As a tribute the band wore their new concert jackets for the first time.  We will all miss Jim's support and wonderfu personality, our sympathy goes to his wife Muriel and all the family circle.

Fodens - the Best so Far!! February 2008

As part of an ongoing partnership between the Fodens (Richardson) band and the Armagh Old Boys brass band, Fodens once again descended on the Northern Irish town during the weekend of Friday 8th - Sunday 10th February.

The weekend started with tutorial sessions where brass players (and some non-brass players!) were put through their paces by members of the Fodens team that had flown over that morning.

The remaining Fodens team flew out to Belfast from Liverpool later that day for what was to be the first of 3 concerts that weekend. Over the two gala concerts (Friday and Saturday) Fodens dazzled audiences with a vastly varied programme of music directed by Mike Fowles. Music ranged from ‘Hora Staccato’ and ‘The Little Russia’ to ‘Laudate Dominum’, ‘Procession to the Minster’ and ‘Life Divine’. Soloist included Les Neish, Mark Wilkinson, Helen Fox, Mark Landon, Alan Wycherley, and Glyn Williams showcasing his immense talent in the recent commission ‘Grandfarthers Clock’ (performed at BIC last year). The concerts were virtual sell-outs both nights and were received wonderfully by the fantastic Market Place Theatre audience.

However in between the two gala concerts, on Saturday afternoon, the Fodens band played an altogether different role in accompanying over 30 young soloists and ensembles. After a three-hour rehearsal with the young people, the afternoon concert started at 2pm and featured a huge range of abilities, styles and ages with some soloists not even into their teens! The young people were fantastic and despite the concert lasting 2 ½ hours (uninterrupted), the audience and band gave every soloist the encouragement and plaudits they deserved.

‘These young people were a truly outstanding credit to their band and their parents. Throughout the rehearsal and the concert soloist performed with confidence and supported their friends and colleagues every step of the way.’

Mark Wilkinson

We now look forward to the August’s summer school where 8 of the Fodens team will be travelling, once more to Armagh for a week of tutoring and music making with musicians young and old.

Gareth Westwood

Fodens (Richardson) Band

Armagh Old Boys' would sincerely like to thank everyone who took part and supported the Fodens weekend!  This was definitely the best so far and we hope this partnership continues to grow from strength to strength!

Parkinson Society Carol Service great success Friday 7th Dec 2007

The Carol Service held in Armagh Old Boys Music Centre on Friday 7th December was a great success and will hopefully become an annual event for the Armagh Branch of the Parkinson Society.  The audience was treated to an array of wonderful festive music including a violin solo and a solo from Glenda Brown.  Christmas messages were read in turn and carols were accompanied  by the band.  The hall was filled with wonderful music and great singing.  Afterwards everyone was treated to a fantastic supper prepared by Friends of the Society.  Funds raised will go towards the good work of the Parkinson Society in the coming year.  Many thanks to everyone who took part and supported the Carol Service.  Special Thanks goes to the extended family of Mrs. N Cunningham and the late Mr. B Cunningham for their courage and determination in making last night happen.

Georgian Day - Saturday 24th November 2007

Saturday 24th November Armagh Old Boys and guest groups from Murley, Poyntzpass and Newtownards braved the weather in fancy dress and played fantastic festive music all day long at Armagh Georgian Day.  The Streets of Armagh were filled with festive tunes as the groups rotated round key points in the City entertaining shoppers and visitors.  The grand finale on the Mall saw all the groups come together to play carols before a fantastic fireworks display to finish the day.  The organisers were delighted with the input from all the groups and thanked them for their continued support in making this year the best Georgian Day ever!  Armagh Old Boys would like to thank everyone for their efforts and support and would particularly like to thank all their guests for a fantastic day!

Tassagh Harvest with a difference- Sunday 18th November 2007

A small group of Armagh Old Boys played at Tassagh in their beautiful Church which is currently undergoing rennovations.  The Church was packed to capacity and The Minister thanked the band from his alter made from haystacks for their contribution in what was a very special service.  The band who have had a long association with Tassagh was delighted to be part of such a memorable occasion and wish the Church every success with their building work and look forward to playing their again.

Armagh Old Boys' AGM, Tuesday 13th november 2007

An AGM with a difference the Band decided to spice things up this year and do things differently!!  Band supporters and Club members unanimously accepted the minutes from last years AGM and re-elected the full committee as it stands to serve another year.  Attendees were given the opportunity to view the accounts whilst being treated to a delightful mini-concert from the band.

Afterwards Raymond Sterritt made a heartfelt speech and presented the 'Alma' Perpetual Trohpy to the band on behalf of the Stevenson and Sterritt clan.  The 'Alma' Cup is in memory of the late Alma Stevenson who was a great supporter of the band.  The Tr ophy is beautifully engraved with one of Alma's favourite motos, 'If at first you don't succeed try try again!'.  The cup was accepted by Gordon Stewart (Jnr) Club Secretary on behalf of the committee who will keep the cup safe until it is presented next year to the Hardest Working Youth.   It is hoped this prize is the first of many as members both past and present continue to encourage the youth who are the lifeblood of the band.

After the AGM Club and Band members were thanked for their continued support and treated to a cup of tea and a fabulous supper.  The committee would like to heartily thank everyone who made the AGM a great success!

remembrance Concert - Friday 9th November 2007

The 2007 Remembrance Concert in the Market Place Theatre was a milestone this year for Armagh Old Boys.  Under the baton of Wesley Thompson the  band played a varied programme to a packed house and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The audience was extremely receptive and many remarked their delight to hear and see the Old Boys looking and sounding so well.  The band has had a long assocation with the Armagh Branch of the Royal British Legion and were thrilled to be part of this annual concert.

The Old Boys as ever will be pivotal in Armistice Day this Sunday as they lead the parade from the Legion premises & provide music at the Cenotaph dressed in their infamous red and black marching uniforms.
