Armagh Apple Blossom Festival 3rd May 2008
On Saturday 3rd May 2008 the band turned out in good numbers to support the local markets in Armagh City Centre as part of the Apple Blossom Fesitval. The programme of music included favourite marches and traditional tunes from yester year. The afternoons events lasted over 4 hours and the band were on duty throughout - well done!
Celebration Service First Presbyterian Church, Armagh '100 Years of brass' 27th April 2008
The AOB Band had the privilege of leading this special service to celebrate 100 years of brass. Armagh Old Boys' Band was founded in 1897, initially as a flute band made the switch to brass in 1908. For many years right up to the 1930's AOB had a very strong relationship with First Presbyterian Church, Armagh.
The theme of the service 'Present yet Unseen' was based on Edward Gregson's arrangement of 'Variations on Laudate Dominum' which the band played as part of the service. Lessons were read by J-A Steveson and William Stevenson. Other music included 'Little Prayer' and 'Where Ere Ye Walk'. A Tuba solo 'Serenade from the Student Prince' was played by Les Neish accompanied by Elise Crean. 'Africian Funk' was played as part of the childrens address and during the offering. Rev Tony Davidson was the speaker for the service and a 100th Anniversary photograph was taken after the service on the front steps of the magnificent building.
Fiskerwick Presbyterian 'Celebration of Life' Ulster Cancer Foundation 13th April 2008
For the second year running the band was delighted to travel to Belfast and participate in this very encouraging service with guest speaker William Crawley from the BBC.
Funeral Sevice - for Life Time Member J.K. Scott April 2008
The band turned out in very good numbers at short notice to play at Jim's funeral service at St. Marks Parish Chursh, Armagh. As a tribute the band wore their new concert jackets for the first time. We will all miss Jim's support and wonderfu personality, our sympathy goes to his wife Muriel and all the family circle.
Fodens - the Best so Far!! February 2008
As part of an ongoing partnership between the Fodens (Richardson) band and the Armagh Old Boys brass band, Fodens once again descended on the Northern Irish town during the weekend of Friday 8th - Sunday 10th February.
The weekend started with tutorial sessions where brass players (and some non-brass players!) were put through their paces by members of the Fodens team that had flown over that morning.
The remaining Fodens team flew out to Belfast from Liverpool later that day for what was to be the first of 3 concerts that weekend. Over the two gala concerts (Friday and Saturday) Fodens dazzled audiences with a vastly varied programme of music directed by Mike Fowles. Music ranged from ‘Hora Staccato’ and ‘The Little Russia’ to ‘Laudate Dominum’, ‘Procession to the Minster’ and ‘Life Divine’. Soloist included Les Neish, Mark Wilkinson, Helen Fox, Mark Landon, Alan Wycherley, and Glyn Williams showcasing his immense talent in the recent commission ‘Grandfarthers Clock’ (performed at BIC last year). The concerts were virtual sell-outs both nights and were received wonderfully by the fantastic Market Place Theatre audience.
However in between the two gala concerts, on Saturday afternoon, the Fodens band played an altogether different role in accompanying over 30 young soloists and ensembles. After a three-hour rehearsal with the young people, the afternoon concert started at 2pm and featured a huge range of abilities, styles and ages with some soloists not even into their teens! The young people were fantastic and despite the concert lasting 2 ½ hours (uninterrupted), the audience and band gave every soloist the encouragement and plaudits they deserved.
‘These young people were a truly outstanding credit to their band and their parents. Throughout the rehearsal and the concert soloist performed with confidence and supported their friends and colleagues every step of the way.’
Mark Wilkinson
We now look forward to the August’s summer school where 8 of the Fodens team will be travelling, once more to Armagh for a week of tutoring and music making with musicians young and old.
Gareth Westwood
Fodens (Richardson) Band
Armagh Old Boys' would sincerely like to thank everyone who took part and supported the Fodens weekend! This was definitely the best so far and we hope this partnership continues to grow from strength to strength!
Parkinson Society Carol Service great success Friday 7th Dec 2007
The Carol Service held in Armagh Old Boys Music Centre on Friday 7th December was a great success and will hopefully become an annual event for the Armagh Branch of the Parkinson Society. The audience was treated to an array of wonderful festive music including a violin solo and a solo from Glenda Brown. Christmas messages were read in turn and carols were accompanied by the band. The hall was filled with wonderful music and great singing. Afterwards everyone was treated to a fantastic supper prepared by Friends of the Society. Funds raised will go towards the good work of the Parkinson Society in the coming year. Many thanks to everyone who took part and supported the Carol Service. Armagh Old Boys' AGM, Tuesday 13th november 2007
An AGM with a difference the Band decided to spice things up this year and do things differently!! Band supporters and Club members unanimously accepted the minutes from last years AGM and re-elected the full committee as it stands to serve another year. Attendees were given the opportunity to view the accounts whilst being treated to a delightful mini-concert from the band.
Afterwards Raymond Sterritt made a heartfelt speech and presented the 'Alma' Perpetual Trohpy to the band on behalf of the Stevenson and Sterritt clan. The 'Alma' Cup is in memory of the late Alma Stevenson who was a great supporter of the band. The Tr ophy is beautifully engraved with one of Alma's favourite motos, 'If at first you don't succeed try try again!'. The cup was accepted by Gordon Stewart (Jnr) Club Secretary on behalf of the committee who will keep the cup safe until it is presented next year to the Hardest Working Youth. It is hoped this prize is the first of many as members both past and present continue to encourage the youth who are the lifeblood of the band.
